DIGITAL AUDIO

2004

The first experiments with digital recording. I had been recording with Computer Music Magazine free DAW. I purchased an Audiophile 24/96 sound card for a G4 Mac I had acquired. Free with the sound card a copy of Ableton Live 1.5. I was hooked instantly to what essentially turned my computer into the sampler and recorder I had always longed for. I am now on version 12 via 3 then 8,9,10,11.

I had an early midi mixing controller for Ableton which looked cool but never fully worked as you would expect. It was a re-awakening of a spirit in home production, tapping into a vibe that I had not felt for some years.

I travelled to Brooklyn New York for the first time to see Andrew Anderson my oldest friend and former TMK founder who relocated there in 1995.
On that trip I picked up around 10 CDs of samples in a bargain bin in Walmart and used them to teach myself Ableton. The samples were instant Hip Hop. The results are horrific. I learned a lot on that journey. There are a few samples that have refused to go away over the years so I might revisit those.

I made a lot of recordings at this time still to be deciphered and shaped into a production. I work in the moment often analysing years later. One recording from this period was made using Native Instruments free Reactor Session software.

I didn’t have a midi controller keyboard to create notes, but I used my computer keyboard for this function. That recording was broadcast 2013 on Channel 4 as part of a soundtrack for the film The Thunder Bird Ballad. I am only now beginning to structure more from that series of recordings made then.
